For serious beach volleyball enthusiasts in Calgary, the “off-season” is merely a strategic opportunity to refine skills and gain a competitive edge. While the outdoor season may be on pause, our indoor sand courts at The Beach YYC offer the perfect environment to focus on a fundamental aspect of the game: footwork.
Superior beach volleyball footwork is the cornerstone of effective passing, digging, setting, and attacking. The sand’s resistance demands efficiency, power, and precise movement. These beach volleyball drills are designed for dedicated players looking to significantly improve their agility and court coverage.
Why Off-Season Footwork Matters on the Sand
Unlike hard-court volleyball, sand presents a constantly shifting, energy-sapping surface. Without strong, explosive, and agile footwork, even the most skilled players will struggle. The off-season is ideal for building that foundational strength and muscle memory without the pressure of competitive games. Focusing on beach volleyball drills for footwork now will pay dividends when the outdoor season returns.
Top 5 Drills to Master Your Beach Footwork
Here are five targeted beach volleyball drills you can execute at The Beach YYC to elevate your game. Remember to focus on quick, controlled movements and proper technique.
1. The Agility Ladder (on Sand)

(Equipment: Cones or tape to mark a “ladder” on the sand)
-
How to: Lay out an imaginary or marked agility ladder on the sand. Perform various ladder drills:
-
Ickey Shuffle: Two feet in, one foot out (alternating sides).
-
Lateral Shuffle: Quick feet shuffling sideways through the ladder.
-
In-Outs: Quick feet in the box, then spread out on the outside of the box, then back in.
-
-
Focus: Rapid foot turnover, coordination, and balance in the sand. Keep your center of gravity low.
-
Sets/Reps: 3-5 reps of each pattern, with short breaks.
2. Three-Step Approach to Attack (Live Ball)
(Equipment: Partner, volleyball)
-
How to: Your partner sets a ball (or tosses) to various attack positions (left sideline, middle, right sideline). From your ready position, execute a quick three-step approach (left-right-left for right-handed hitter, or right-left-right for left-handed) to jump and attack the ball. Focus on exploding off the sand.
-
Focus: Explosiveness, timing, and dynamic movement from defense to offense. Practice varying the approach angles.
-
Sets/Reps: 10-15 approaches per side, alternating attack zones.
3. Zig-Zag Defensive Shuffles (Ball-less)
(Equipment: 3-5 cones, placed in a zig-zag pattern across your half of the court)
-
How to: Start in a ready defensive position at the first cone. Explosively shuffle sideways and slightly forward to the next cone, maintaining a low stance. Change direction quickly at each cone, moving across the court in a zig-zag pattern.
-
Focus: Lateral quickness, low athletic stance, and efficient change of direction – crucial for digging and covering tips. Minimize vertical movement.
-
Sets/Reps: 5-7 full zig-zag patterns across the court, with active recovery.
4. “Starfish” Court Coverage (Partner Drill)
(Equipment: Partner, volleyball)
-
How to: Player 1 starts in the center of their half of the court. Player 2 tosses balls to various corners and short areas of Player 1’s court (e.g., deep right, short left, deep middle, etc.). Player 1 must quickly shuffle or sprint to play each ball. The goal is to touch or pass the ball back to Player 2.
-
Focus: Comprehensive court coverage, quick decision-making, and transitioning between defensive sprints and controlled passing movements.
-
Sets/Reps: 2-3 minute intervals, followed by a rest, repeat 3-4 times. Switch roles with partner.
5. Back-Pedal to Sprint Transition (Ball-less or Live Ball)
(Equipment: None, or partner with a ball)
-
How to: Start at the net. Back-pedal quickly to the attack line (or slightly beyond). Upon reaching the line, immediately transition into a forward sprint back towards the net, as if chasing a short ball. Can be done with a partner calling out “back” or “short.”
-
Focus: Mastering the crucial transition from deep court defense to quick attack or short ball pursuit. Maintain balance and quick foot turnover during the transition.
-
Sets/Reps: 8-10 reps per set, 3-4 sets.
