Volleyball is one of the most exciting and fast-paced sports in the world — but did you know there are actually two main types of the game? Many players and fans wonder, “What’s the difference between beach volleyball and regular volleyball?”
While both versions share the same goal — keeping the ball off the ground — the rules, environment, and gameplay are quite different. Here’s everything you need to know.
1. The Playing Surface

The most obvious difference is the playing surface.
-
Beach volleyball is played on soft sand, often outdoors or indoors on an artificial beach setup like at The Beach YYC. The sand changes movement dynamics, making jumps and dives more challenging but gentler on the joints.
-
Regular (indoor) volleyball is played on a hard court made of wood or synthetic material, which allows for quicker movements and higher jumps.
Because sand absorbs energy, beach volleyball requires greater strength and endurance, while indoor volleyball rewards speed and explosiveness.
2. Number of Players
In indoor volleyball, there are six players per team — each with specialized roles like setter, spiker, and libero.
In beach volleyball, teams usually consist of two players, with no specific positions. Both athletes must serve, set, pass, block, and attack. This makes beach volleyball more versatile and physically demanding, as players need to master all aspects of the game.

3. Court Size and Boundaries
The court size differs between the two versions:
-
Beach volleyball court: 16m x 8m
-
Indoor volleyball court: 18m x 9m
The smaller court size in beach volleyball helps balance out the smaller team size. However, moving through sand adds an extra level of difficulty, making court coverage a real workout!
4. Ball Design and Feel

The ball used in beach volleyball is slightly larger, lighter, and softer than an indoor volleyball. It also has a rougher texture to make it easier to grip in outdoor conditions like wind or humidity.
Indoor volleyballs, on the other hand, are heavier, smaller, and smoother, built for faster, more controlled rallies on hard surfaces.

5. Scoring and Match Format
Both types of volleyball use the rally scoring system, where a point is awarded on every play. However, match structures differ slightly:
-
Indoor volleyball: Best of five sets, each to 25 points (with a two-point lead required).
-
Beach volleyball: Best of three sets, with the first two to 21 points and the third (if needed) to 15 points.
Beach volleyball also tends to have shorter rallies but longer rallies per point, as sand slows down movement.
6. Environment and Atmosphere
The environment plays a big role in the feel of each game.
-
Beach volleyball offers a more casual and social vibe, often set to music and surrounded by a beach-like atmosphere. It’s as much about fun and connection as it is about competition.
-
Indoor volleyball focuses more on team structure and strategy, often played in formal leagues, schools, or professional arenas.
At The Beach YYC, you can enjoy that laid-back beach volleyball experience — indoors and year-round — without worrying about the weather!
7. Clothing and Equipment
Beach volleyball players typically wear light, breathable athletic wear suitable for sand play and heat, while indoor volleyball players wear court shoes, knee pads, and team uniforms for traction and protection on hard floors.
Why Many Players Prefer Beach Volleyball
Beach volleyball offers a unique workout that challenges both your body and mind. It builds endurance, balance, and all-around athleticism since players handle every role. Plus, the sand environment at places like The Beach YYC adds an element of fun that makes every game feel like a mini getaway.
